Recently we had our Facebook account shut down because some or one of our ads had violations. The people that respond to appeals, if they are people and not software bots, do not have the permission or ability to evaluate why this happened and identify a situation where the algorithm making the decision may have made a mistake. So the end result is we lose access to an advertising account that has been in good standing since 2007 and has spent more than one million dollars on Facebook. End of discussion as far as Facebook is concerned.
I also had a situation where I changed the bank account to make ACH payments on a credit card I use. I made a mistake and the bank account did not have the funds to make the payment that I initiated. A fraud hold was placed on the account. I called to explain what happened, which was really an innocent mistake on my part. Unfortunately I can not provide the exact document that the bank is asking for and now my accounts are frozen. I don’t know how to resolve the situation and no one at the credit card company will actually let me explain what happened.
The problem seems to be that once a company reaches a certain size they simply can not handle exceptions. The organization is too large to allow free thinking by employees, because if they allowed free thinking by and empowered their lower level employees those employees could take advantage of the organization. And since an organization that big can’t care about employees the employees have no real incentive to care about the company.
What is the solution? In the banking industry you could use one of the few regional banks that are left. For Facebook unfortunately there is no obvious replacement. Once a company is large enough you need to understand the potential problems that will be created by their size when you decide to deal with them.
